What are hydrogel beads?
Hydrogel beads are bright, smooth, and elastic balls that expand several times in size after absorbing water. They are popular in children's play (such as in hydrogel guns, also known as Orbeez guns), in decoration, and even in plant care.
What are they made of?
These beads are made of superabsorbent polymermost commonly - sodium polyacrylate. It is a safe and non-toxic material capable of absorbing a large amount of water — more than a hundred times its own weight.
How do they work?
Initially, the beads are very small (1–2 mm), but after being placed in water, they expand to 10–15 mm. (for toy guns, a 7–8 mm diameter is used). They swell thanks to their sponge-like structure, which draws in and retains water. They become elastic but burst upon impact without sharp fragments, reducing the risk of injury.
Properties of hydrogel beads:
- Size: from 1–2 mm to 10–15 mm after soaking
- Shape, color: usually spherical, transparent or brightly colored
- Safety: non-toxic, but not intended for consumption
- Decomposition: gradually in sunlight and air
- Effect of temperature: karstumā izžūst un saraujas
- Environmentally friendly: composed of 95% water
Where are hydrogel beads used?
- For children's sensory play
- In tactical and team games outdoors (as an alternative to paintball and airsoft)
- For decorative purposes (in vases, etc.)
- For soil hydration in flower pots
- In anti-stress toys and for massage
⚠️ Important: the beads are not intended for swallowing. Not suitable for children under 3 years old (choking hazard)! When used with toy guns, protective goggles must be worn! Do not shoot at the head or eyes! Hydrogel guns are recommended for use from age 14 (or from age 8 under adult supervision).
Preparing hydrogel beads

Pour the contents of the packet into an empty container and add clean water.
Keep in mind that the beads will grow approximately 8 times in size, so the container must be large enough. A standard 10,000-bead packet requires about 5L of water, but it can be used in portions.

Let them sit for 3–4 hours until they become
7–8 mm in size.
Oversized beads may get stuck in the gun, while undersized ones won’t fly far enough. Warm water can speed up the growth process.

As soon as the beads have grown to the desired
to the desired size, pour out the excess water and start using them!
