What are hydrogel beads and how to use them

orbeez

Hydrogel balls are bright, smooth, and elastic beads that expand several times in size after absorbing water. They are popular in children’s play (for example, in hydrogel guns, also known as orbeez guns), decoration, and even plant care.

What are they made of?

These balls are made of a superabsorbent polymer, most commonly sodium polyacrylate. It is a safe and non-toxic material capable of absorbing a large amount of water — more than a hundred times its own weight.

How do they work?

Initially, the balls are very small (1–2 mm), but after being placed in water they expand to 10–15 mm (for guns, 7–8 mm in diameter are used). They swell thanks to their “sponge-like” structure, which draws in and retains water. They become elastic, but upon impact they shatter without sharp fragments, reducing the risk of injury.

Properties of hydrogel beads:

  • Size: from 1–2 mm to 10–15 mm after soaking
  • Shape, color: usually spherical, transparent or brightly colored
  • Safety: non-toxic, but not intended for consumption
  • Decomposition: gradually in sunlight and air
  • Effect of temperature: karstumā izžūst un saraujas
  • Environmentally friendly: composed of 95% water

Where are hydrogel beads used?

  • For children's sensory play
  • In tactical and team games outdoors (as an alternative to paintball and airsoft)
  • For decorative purposes (in vases, etc.)
  • For soil hydration in flower pots
  • In anti-stress toys and for massage

⚠️ Important: the beads are not intended for swallowing. Not suitable for children under 3 years old (choking hazard)! When used with toy guns, protective goggles must be worn! Do not shoot at the head or eyes! Hydrogel guns are recommended for use from age 14 (or from age 8 under adult supervision).
